2023 Honda CR-V VS the competition

Why the 2023 Honda CR-V is the best in its class

The 2023 Honda CR-V is one of the best—if not the best—SUV in its class. We admit, of course, that we’re somewhat biased. However, the numerous attributes of the compact SUV and the way it compares with its direct competitors help us understand why Car and Driver has included the 2023 Honda CR-V among its top 10 vehicles of the year.

An energy-efficient 2023 Honda CR-V

After comparing the 2023 Honda CR-V’s fuel economy with that of other SUVs in its class, we can rightfully assert that it gets better mileage. With average combined consumption of only 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers and only 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers in the city, it’s number one in its class. And for even better fuel efficiency, the Honda CR-V is available in a hybrid version!

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 peaks at 10.2 L per 100 km in city driving, while on the highway, even the Hyundai Tucson fares less well at 7.4 L (compared with 7.1 for the 2023 Honda CR-V).

More than anything else, the modern mechanics under the hood explain this difference. In fact, the 2023 CR-V relies on a 1.5 L four-cylinder 190-hp turbo engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that maintains the engine’s rpm at an optimal level. At 187 horsepower, the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai Tucson come in slightly behind the Honda.

A brilliant cabin in the Honda CR-V

In addition to its admirable performance on the road, the 2023 Honda CR-V offers a cabin with comfort and room to spare, including 2,166 liters of cargo volume—among the highest in its class—with the rear seats folded flat.

The closest rival is the Ford Escape with 2,119 liters. Even the 2023 Toyota RAV4 has no more than 1,977 liters of space available.

In terms of infotainment, the 2023 Honda CR-V avails of a multipurpose touchscreen housed in the center of the dashboard, offering access to information on comfort, conveniences and entertainment at your fingertips. It’s also compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Most of the CR-V’s competitors feature similar systems, although the screen in the Mazda CX-5 isn’t a touchscreen in some instances.

Finally, when it comes to safety, the 2023 Honda CR-V includes the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assist technologies. To ensure an equally safe trip, the Ford Escape would have to rely on the Co-Pilot 360 system, which isn’t standard equipment on all models.

A plus for the 2023 Honda CR-V

With its reduced fuel consumption, numerous versions and modern design, the 2023 Honda CR-V is the most versatile new SUV in its class. Now it’s up to you to take it for a free test drive at your Lallier Honda dealership.
