2024 Honda Civic vs the 2024 Mazda3

The 2024 Honda Civic and the 2024 Mazda3 are both leaders in the compact car category, especially in Quebec. These two vehicles, featuring superior-quality assembly, are dependable and designed for driving pleasure.

Setting aside the Honda Type R version, which is more of a “bad boy” than the Mazda GT Turbo is, the two cars are more or less comparable when it comes to their inherent sportiness. They’re both energetic and they both avail of a rigid chassis and precise steering. They also both hold the road well, chiefly thanks to their independent front suspension and aerodynamic design. Finally, they’re both available with a manual six-speed transmission and they both come in several different versions, as well as sedan and hatchback configurations.

A better powertrain for the Honda Civic in 2024

There are also some notable differences between the two vehicles. Aside from their respective easily recognizable looks, the 2024 Honda Civic sedan is slightly shorter (at 4,655 mm) than the Mazda3 (at 4,662 mm); however, the Honda has a longer wheelbase (2,735 mm vs 2,726 mm for the Mazda). Although the Civic is narrower and lower, it offers more cargo space than the Mazda3 sedan (419 liters vs 374 liters). In their hatchback versions, both cars offer a lot of space.

With a weight of up to 1,446 kg, the Civic is lighter than the Mazda3 (at 1,539 kg). This affects their respective fuel consumption, despite the efficiency of the available engines. In its less sporty version, the Honda achieves highway fuel economy as low as 6.0 liters per 100 kilometers and average fuel economy of 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers. Meanwhile, the best that the Mazda3 can offer is 6.3 liters per 100 km (highway) and 7.5 liters per 100 km (combined).

The powertrains get the job done. However, the Honda offers a wider selection. You can choose from a 2.0 L inline-four (158 hp), two 1.5 L inline-four turbos (180 hp and 200 hp) and a 2.0 L inline-four turbo (315 hp), not to mention a hybrid powertrain. The Mazda is only available with a 2.5 L inline-four (191 hp) or a 2.5 L inline-four turbo (250 hp). However, it’s worth mentioning that only the Mazda offers all-wheel drive. The other available transmission for the Mazda is an A6 (and a CVT for the Honda).

More affordable prestige

The 2024 Honda Civic and the 2024 Mazda3 are both leaders in their class. In their premium versions, they can hold their own against certain more expensive luxury cars. They both feature fine interior workmanship. Finally, in terms of equipment, both cars offer a lot of the safety, connectivity and driver assist features you’ll currently find on the market.
